Traveler’s Tips

Travel Documents

US and European Union citizens do not require a special visa to Mexico. If you are traveling from the US, you must have a valid passport. (This is a recent change in US policy: a birth certificate no longer is acceptable.) Upon presenting yourself at the ticket counter in the US, or in the airplane, an airline representative will give you a tourist card to fill out. (These cards are also available in Mexican immigration in the Mexico City airport.) Make sure to sign on the back and to have filled it out BEFORE presenting yourself before the immigration officials. S/he will request the filled-out card as well as your proof of citizenship. Make sure not to lose the section of the form that is returned to you, as you will have to present this to the airline representative on your way out of Mexico. Citizens of other countries should check the Mexican Embassy’s internet page for their respective countries in order to learn of possible visa requirements.
