Location of Meetings
Meetings will be held in four hotels, to be listed on the ACLA website shortly, and four buildings of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (la BUAP). All venues are within fairly short walking distance of one another, but we are allowing a half hour between sessions to give you time to find your way.
The historic center of Puebla is laid out on a grid, with street names all being North, South, East or West, with odd or even numbers depending on how many blocks removed the street is from the central plaza and in which direction. (Avenues, as opposed to streets, have names that are not North, South, East or West.) All poblanos (residents of Puebla) insist that this system is crystal clear, while most non-poblanos find it extremely confusing. In any case, the buildings in which the sessions are to be held are close to each other, so getting lost isn’t serious. (Crystal clear maps will be provided!)
Because our host university, the BUAP, is located in the heart of the historic center of Puebla, its “campus” consists of a number of historic buildings, many of them formerly opulent residences, or mansiones, with interior patios and rooms (now classrooms and offices) giving onto the interior patio on both the first and second levels; the second level has as balcony surrounding and overlooking the central patio. The central administration building of the BUAP is called the Carolino (after King Charles III of Spain), and is the original site of the Jesuit College of the Holy Spirit, founded in 1578 in Puebla. The monumental building now in use dates from the 17th century. The Carolino is attached to the Jesuit church, la iglesia de la Companía, and opposite the Hotel Colonial, one of our conference hotels; it has three interior patios and several conference large rooms that we will use for sessions.
To give you a general idea of the BUAP, see this map of the “campus”. On this map, the Carolino is #410, and the other BUAP buildings where our sessions will be held are La Casa Amarilla (#419), La Casa Mora (3 Oriente #218, not shown), and La Casa Presno (#412).
